How and why is my credit card affected when I open and close a credit card?

Question by Double Negative: How and why is my credit card affected when I open and close a credit card?
I see a great deal at a store to open up a credit card and get a prize or a rebate. If I want the big discount I open the credit card and then get the discount but I don’t want or need the credit card at all.

Is it better to close down this new card or keep it open with a zero balance? How does opening and closing account affect my credit score?

Your credit score is based on history. If you open an account, your score will temporarily go down. It will eventually recover from that.

Closing an account is a slightly different matter. Depending on how much total credit you have (add up the limits on all of your accounts), closing an account can cause your score to go down if it significantly reduces your total credit. From that standpoint, leaving the card active with a zero balance would help your score.

However having an account open can create another avenue for potential fraud. I, personally, close accounts I don’t use for that reason. Many card companies will also close an account automatically after a period of inactivity; 3 years is common.

There are a lot of things that can make your score vary a few points. Honestly, don’t worry about your score that much. Use credit responsibly, NEVER be late on a payment and pay it off every month. Your score will take care of itself.

You cannot apply for credit until your 18 years old. You can have your parents check with their bank to see if they can open an acct with a VISA/DEBIT card.

I have made some big financial decisions in my life and as a result I have horrible credit. I am looking for a credit card company that will issue me a card in order to rebuild my credit. Are there any companies that don’t have an outrageous interest rate that will help me get my credit back on track?

there are a couple of ways you could start building credit, you could get a small personal lend which you might need a cosigner or the outdoing way will be getting an assign cards, you could get a credit card and use it for your every day expenses but make certain you pay in full at the end of the month that way it will show pay in full everytime the credit card company reports to the imputing beuros. At the begining you will only be approved for the lower end credit tease but once you build credit in about 6-9 months you should be able to apply for a better card with good benefits such as loose miles or cash back. Check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com and go under bad or no credit segment and you will find a few choices. But if you are a student apply of a student credit card these cards have no annual fees and low rates.
