What credit card would you recommend for someone trying to re-establish good credit history?

Question by Tamborine: What credit card would you recommend for someone trying to re-establish good credit history?
I have decent credit but I had cancelled all my cards when trying to get out of debt. I am now free of all unsecured debt but I need to have a card so in the future I won’t be hurt by having no credit.

I’m thinking I want a card with no annual fee and a low APR. The card would only be used very occassionally and paid off immediately. I have no desire to repeat previous mistakes.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good card for this purpose?
Okay, as I said, but everyone is skipping, is that I have decent credit. My credit score is 700.

When I got into trouble I went into debt consolidation right away BEFORE my credit got screwed up.

But I do appreciate those of you who are taking the time to answer.

Q&A: Will a credit card application today affect closing on a home tomorrow?

Question by toni: Will a credit card application today affect closing on a home tomorrow?
I’m closing on a house tomorrow. Will my credit card application that went through today (rejected, btw) affect anything tomorrow? Or is it safe to assume all of the loan stuff is pretty much done, we just have to sign the papers? I have no credit history.
We’re signing the papers tonight, but since it’s after business hours they said it won’t go through until tomorrow. Does this make any difference?

You’ll be okay unless the lender runs a last minute credit check.

Q&A: What should I do if my credit card application was denied?

Question by blank: What should I do if my credit card application was denied?
I just tried submitting an online application for Capital One after receiving an offer in the mail but it was denied right away. I read somewhere that your credit score can be lowered from getting denied from too many. It’s my first time trying to get one so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do. How am I supposed to know which ones will deny my application? What should my next step for getting a credit card be?

Q&A: Is requesting an increase in a credit card limit treated the same as an application for new credit for FICO?

Question by MSB: Is requesting an increase in a credit card limit treated the same as an application for new credit for FICO?
I know that applying for a new card will reduce my FICO, and that increasing credit limits (while keeping debt amounts constant) will increase my score – but this would not be the case if requesting the increase in credit limit is treated as a new credit card application?

How often to apply for credit card?

Question by Kat: How often to apply for credit card?
Now, I have never had a card. And when I applied I was denied, because there’s nothing there. I don’t have a score or credit history. And I heard when you apply for a card it lowers your score. What if you have no score? Do you go negative?

No you will not go negative that is not mathmatically possible when talking about credit scores. You will have a credit inquiry placed on file with the bureau they checked from though. And yes if you have to several applications in a short period of time, then that is often a red flag for many lenders. When your credit is checked there is not some universal score that everyone uses that you must meet. There are scores that are more widely used like a FICO score, but not everyone uses those either. They are used more for home loans and auto loans. Each place actually does it a little bit differntly as to how they score information in your attributing report. Without getting side tracked to much in the future (if you do apply for several credit cards and or loans) then your applications will come back denied and the reasons will be too many credit inquiries and little or no history. Try doing some research, some retail store credit cards have less restrictive qualifications for approval and may grant you a small confining. Try also speaking with your bank. They often have types of credit cards for people equitable starting out, such as a secured credit card.
