It is so common these days for people to fill out an online credit card application, that most people do not think twice about providing their personal information over the internet. But applying for a credit card is serious business. You could get into trouble by offering incorrect or incomplete information. And worse, you could sign up for what you think is a low apr credit card and end up being charged exorbitant interest with no recourse.
When you go online to check out credit card offers, you will find a myriad of deals to choose from. Narrow your search terms down to criteria that is important to you, such as low interest, introductory interest free period, long grace period, reward program, airline mile rewards, or cash back credit cards. When you find an offer that meets your needs, you should be able to fill out the online credit card application right away. However, before you proceed, there are some things to keep in mind.
Be sure to read all the fine print. Unfortunately, some companies will not make this easy for you. Most online forms, just like standard applications, have the details of limitations or increasing rates in fine print at the bottom of the form. However, you may have to manually click a link to view these restrictions. Look for a link to a section titled Terms and Conditions for all the details of the offer. It is vital that you take the time to do this before filling out your application. If you do not read the restrictions of a card agreement and you sign the agreement anyway, you will still be held liable for any violation of that agreement. Remember that an online credit card application is a legal document that gives your approval for the company to check your credit.
After you read all the terms, it is a good idea to print out a copy of the information, as well as a copy of the online credit card application before you submit it. Keeping these types of records now can protect you later.

Carol Bell asked:
Companies who offer online credit card applications always receive a number of questions from the applicants about the procedure of applying for a credit card. Many finance companies now offer this facility and ensure that it is convenient for the user with an application process that is helpful. Websites like this also guarantee to answer all important questions about making an application online. Strangely though, the main question that needs to be answered is where to find an online application form because some companies are not very good when it comes to navigating their site. All the information and links you require are at the website on the sitemap page which is in essence a complete index of the site.
Each site usually has a number of special offers available to tempt new custom if you just take a look; these can be anything form low interest rates to air miles! After you decide which offers appeal to you then you can apply for a credit card by clicking the ‘Apply Here’ button next to the offers that are of interest to you. An online application form will available as soon as you have hit the ‘Apply’ button. The process is quite straightforward and won’t take long to complete the application. It’s a secure process, well it has to be, and one that’s also easy to use.
Before you start applying for your credit card, consider just what information will be asked for the application. It helps to know this in advance so you can have everything handy and avoid the application taking longer than necessary. Delays happen when all the information required isn’t close to hand. What you don’t want to do while your applying for your credit card online is to leave the form to find required information. It’s good when you can remember most of the information required.
Obviously the application will ask for the basics like your birth date, full name and address. There are other questions you may need to refer to though such as driver license number or social security number. It shouldn’t take to long once you have completed the form before you get an answer. Waiting for the reply is always the most demanding part of the applying for a credit card. Because each credit card company works differently, there’s generally a different delay with each.
As each credit card company is different so are the delays experienced before you receive your credit card; be prepared as some companies may make you wait 14 days or more. It’s always worth remembering that if you have a good track record, when you apply for a credit card you probably won’t wait as long. Late or defaulted payments can give you a bad credit record. The online applications are secure and convenient and you can choose the credit card of your choice.

Mario Churchill asked:
Processing a credit card application online has slightly different procedures from applying for a card through regular means. While most of the differences are relatively minor, you should still keep the differences in mind when making an online application. Like knowing the differences between a walk-in job application and simply sending your resume through email, paying attention to the small details can make the difference between approval and rejection.
The first difference is time. Most credit card providers are only starting up their online application procedures. So, while in theory online applications are supposed to be processed faster, due to the fact that it’s a relatively new program most companies will take as much or even more time to get your application processed. Be patient.
There are two exceptions to this rule. The first exception is the largest credit card companies, who have the financial means to support online applications with sufficient equipment and personnel. The second exception to the rule involves relatively new credit card providers who have set their initial operations up with the latest technology in mind, so their online application procedures will be up to date and an integral part of their companies from the get go.
The second difference is in the fees for application. Most companies will offer different charges for online applications as opposed to regular applications. When applying online, be sure to read the details given to make sure that you are aware of the charges involved and can weigh your options. Also, the interest rates and transaction fees may slightly differ for credit cards obtained through online applications.
The third difference is in Card Selection. While more and more companies are taking advantage of online application for their customers, due to it’s limitations not every type of credit card or certain features can be obtained through online application. Some examples are credit card classes with much higher credit limits, and some types of dual role debit-credit cards. Because of this restriction, you should review all the options given by your prospective credit card provider and find out if you can apply online for the type of card you want.
Lastly, one area you should look into is your credit history. If you have a good credit history you should be fine. If it’s not, you should know that some credit card companies will automatically disapprove online applications made by people with bad credit ratings. While a lot of credit card companies allow concessions for people with bad credit history, the option of applying online is usually reserved for those with clean records. If you’ve got a bad record and still want a credit card, then more often than not you’ll have to inquire in person.
One seeming exception to this rule is that some credit card providers will actually provide credit cards with NO background credit checks, AND will let you apply online! This may seem like an ideal scenario for people with bad credit histories. However, pay very close attention to the fine print and other stipulations when applying for that credit card, because there’s likely going to be a catch somewhere. The catch will usually involve huge interest rates or larger than average charges for delayed payments – which pretty much just takes advantage of you if you fall into the same financial pattern that got you bad credit in the first place. If it seems too good to be true, it most likely is.
